Have you ever felt the pressure of breaking the build?

We had the current build status projected on a large wall…

If you broke the build, everyone knew about it!

My anxiety went through the roof the first time I had to commit my code…

In another role, I received the dreaded email that my last deployment was holding up the release of several other teams with looming deadlines…

#developers #coding #softwaredevelopment #softwareengineering #wellbeing #mindset #mentalhealth

…And then I noticed it had been sent to “Everyone”… 😱

How do you cope with the pressure of breaking the build or an environment?

@richarddonovan Disclaimer: I say this as an engineering manager that burnt out trying to perform to unrealistic expectations. (1/3)
I'm sorry if this comes off as unrealistic or idealistic, but for the life of me, I can't imagine how some companies put devs under so much pressure to "do things right" and not break anything, and expect "innovation" at the same time. If an employer doesn't accept that builds breaking is a risk to be managed and not prevented, it's like putting all your savings into Amazon and getting pissed when it goes down. Builds breaking is why we have red/green deployments. (2/3)
@richarddonovan
If this continues, run away. Your sanity is worth a lot more than senior leadership pushing their risk aversion and lack of management skills down to you. (3/3)
