Public transport to be free for Victorians in April as fuel prices climb

The Victorian government says public transport will be free across the state in April in a bid to relieve cost-of-living pressure as fuel prices continue to climb.

@SeaFury NSW it following suit 🀬
@SeaFury Why is it free and when does it end?
@humanhorseshoes Fuel price increase. This means I can get to Hobart and back for free. 209km trip

@humanhorseshoes @SeaFury looks like it ends July 1st.

Still have normal bus fares in Canberra, which are free for me anyway, except during peak hours weekdays.

@SeaFury Could you tell me more?
@onekind State govt announced it to help with fuel costs. I guess they’re paying for it πŸ‘
@onekind @SeaFury Heard of it in one of my public transport circles, all PT there is free from the 30th. I haven’t heard of an end date, but it’s part of a cost of living measure.
@sendai Yup. They also did similar around Covid times. @onekind
@SeaFury heck yeah that's awesome
@SeaFury see? Proof that if they’re serious about getting people on public transport for all the benefits it brings, they can do it at any time.
@dgar Absolutely! It gas been a really popular move πŸ‘β€οΈ
@SeaFury That’s fantastic. Gotta love Tassie.
@skatercat I saw maybe Sydney might be too?
@SeaFury I saw Melbourne is starting free public transport in April . Nothing so far here in Adelaide unfortunately.

@SeaFury we have 50c public transport here - have had for quite a while

(Wonder if our dear leaders will increase it on the pretext of fuel prices πŸ€” )

@AnnonBudgie @SeaFury 50c is dumb. It costs at least that much to collect, process, and enforce payments. That's savings on maintenance on turnstiles, payment terminals, card readers, networking, servers, IT, signage, customer help lines, driver time wasted arguing with customers, bank interchange fees, etc. They'd save money by making ridership free AND as a side benefit would increase the use of public transit.

@targetdrone
They've made a motza on enforcement!
The bus drivers are not required to enforce... that is done by the enforcement team

Nowadays if you don't have a ticket you get a $300 (I think.. could be more) fine, 1 warning.. no excuses

My old public transport fees were around $10 a day (and I get concession fares)
@SeaFury

@AnnonBudgie @SeaFury All transit fees do is make selfish people happy. "I ain't paying for no buses for no poors!" Or a politician who can say "vote for me and those poors will pay their own way!"
@SeaFury I'm really happy about Vic PT being free for April. We had free weekend PT over summer, and it was great. Free every day is fantastic!
@SeaFury News article I just read says free PT for three months in Tas. That's great!
@SeaFury damn. we need this everywhere asap.
