A European Office Suite? We have one already!

It is interesting to see Euro-Office launched, with Nextcloud in charge. We would like to provide some initial thoughts here to address people’s questions.

@CollaboraOffice You guys really need to get your act together and combine your strengths to create one great product that works for everyone. Nobody wants to have to choose between five different office platforms, especially when you want to stay compatible with the others.

@CollaboraOffice this was a really confusing post. Am I getting this correctly:

  • onlyoffice is largely developed by Russians and must be subject to scrutiny.
  • onlyoffice has licensing issues that euro office inherits.
  • collabora is actually European.
I agree with the post and it highlights an interesting point about Euro-Office's potential legal hurdles.
I think the long-winded jab at the name is greatly exaggerated, nobody reads a name like this as a statement it's the ONLY European Office product. Relax. 😅
However Collabora and its base LibreOffice are far far away from having decent OOXML compatibility and an adequately modern UI polish.
Yes ribbon is a divisive topic, I like it, others may not, but at the end of the day it'd be nice for it (and classic UI) to look less dated. This is a matter of polish and detail. That's - besides MSOffice compatibility - THE area where OnlyOffice wins. Sadly so! I wish LibreOffice and by extension Euro-Office were champions in UI design, MS Office compatibility (cause existing docs and real world circumstances are a thing) all while being fully libre.
PS: just because people want and need better OOXML compatibility doesn't mean they wanna be stuck with it for new documents, but office editors are EDITORS, not just makers. Being excellent with compatibility to existing docs is a way too small priority for LibreOffice it seems.

@glassedsilver I agree. LibreOffice feels dated. OnlyOffice feels more like a modern product though I still prefer Apple Keynote over its competitors.

Of the alternatives to Big Tech Office I would prefer OnlyOffice but I chose not to use it because of its Russian roots. So if NextCloud can improve on that EuroOffice would be my goto office package.

@glassedsilver Hmmm......it turns out that Euro-Office is not meant to be a stand alone product. It's for online use only.

Well, back to square one. I'll probably stick with Softmaker's Office NX. I did try Collabora for Linux but it fails to load half the time.

@sorenladegaard What makes you believe that? Did you have a look at the repo rather than only looking at the (apparently) poorly researched articles?

I doubt they fork the OnlyOffice Desktop repo just to not do anything with it. So far they don't seem to have done much with it, but I'll keep an eye open on this for sure. And I'm personally highly interested both for the webapp as well as the standalone desktop suite. 👍
