If one wanted to play a few old game boy games and was gunna buy a handheld off AliExpress what ones should I be looking at
One for @gabz I reckon

Torn between TrimUI Brick Hammer, Ambernic RG35XX, and Miyoo Mini Plus.

I suspect TrimUI is going to win because it definitely looks the nicest but it’s also the most expensive.

Got a great deal on a Miyoo Mini Plus in atomic purple 🟪 🎮

Thanks for everyone's suggestions on this, it was very helpful.

@robb I’d also recommend snagging an sd card from somewhere. The ones that these devices come with are notoriously low quality.

Also I dunno what your library looks like to start, but you could always do a quick online search for “tiny best set” to kickstart your… archive.

Enjoy!

@doubleaa I've ordered a Sandisk card and also I can't imagine what I would want to download, I only intend to play games I own that I've ripped for backup purposes, officer 😏
@robb That’s my favorite little JRPG machine, hope you like it! OnionOS is the bee’s knees, MinUI is nice too.
@robb If you’re in no rush, hold fire on ordering until Aliexpress is doing a sale. Substantially reduces what you’ll pay. Non-metal TrimUI Bricks are £42-49 at that time.
@robb At the risk of further complicating things, the RG35XXSP (the clamshell one) is great.
@robb I have both the RG35xx and Miyoo Mini Plus; I prefer the miyoo especially with the OnionOS firmware. https://onionui.github.io

OS overhaul for Miyoo Mini and Mini+

@robb Different beast but I picked up an Analogue Pocket and it’s really nice.
@robb If you need a way to compare them by specs and supported platforms, I can recommend Retro Catalog: https://retrocatalog.com/compare/trimui-brick-hammer/miyoo-mini-plus

Compare specifications, features and performance of TRIMUI Brick Hammer vs. Miyoo Mini Plus, and visualize the size difference

@janmon Thanks this is really useful.

@robb I have a few and my favorite is the miyoo flip 2. It has the form factor of the gameboy SP and can play just about anything I throw at it

Should be no more than $40 usd. I'll send the listing I used if you are interested

For me, the trimUI is a fancy fountain pen that enthusiasts get. The Miyoo and Ambernic are the Lamy Safari or TWBSI eco

@evs That’s a good comparison (and one I usually fall for to buy “the best” thing).

I’m not interested in a flip one tbh but this does sway me towards the Miyoo Mini Plus more.

I’m never going to emulate anything beyond game boy advance which it can handle fine.

@robb yeah, same. I thought that might help with grounding them in something else you were familiar with

My wife has my Miyoo Mini Plus and she loves it. Mainly plays Kirby's Dreamland and Dr Mario.

As others mentioned - either OnionOS or MinUI are quick ways to improve the user experience. Both are simple to install.

@robb I have both a Miyoo Mini Plus and a Brick. The Brick is built better, has a better screen and just feels more premium. It also collects the most dust while I play games on the Miyoo.

Super subjective but the button feel on the Miyoo just can’t be beat for me, and OnionOS is just incredibly good.

@doubleaa I’m leaning towards the Miyoo tbh because it’s much cheaper but will still do what I want.
@robb @gabz
@joel might know too

@cory Just saw this and my recommendation goes to the Anbernic RG35XX SP or the TrimUI Brick

If you want Horizontal you can't go wrong with the RG35XX H, if you want pure nostalgia you want the RG34XX

@robb @gabz

@joel @cory @robb the miyoo mini plus is another good one
@robb oh boy! Well, is this going to be just for GB/GBC/GBA type games? Do you value performance of portability (although those games aren’t that demanding) and what’s the smallest screen size you are willing to have? Do you need WiFi? Oh and clamshell or no? The trimUI brick is a solid choice and there are a few good simple CFW for it.
@robb @gabz it's true. He has them all!
@jason @robb honestly, the trimUI Brick, and you install MinUI and you’re set
@gabz @jason The green one is incredible
@robb I've got a MIYOO Mini Plus it's pretty good. Really active community around it and has a great custom ROM called OnionUI. Failing that you've always got the SteamDeck of course probably not on AliExpress but it's pretty much the best handheld for retro stuff.

@robb TrimUI Brick. There are cheaper ones but the Brick has the best build quality and smoothest experience. Installing MinUI on it makes it an absolute dream.

Source: I’ve bought way too many.

@robb Also there’s a metal one that’s pink which screams Robb

Just finished a Link’s Awakening playthrough on mine. It’s such a great device. Mine’s a classic purple but I kinda crave the green metal one

TrimUI Brick Hammer Review: Same but Metal

@bendaubney Although you are right about me and pink, I think the green metal is the best one

@robb Have a look at Playtiles. A cheaper option and clearly not as good as an actual handheld. But works in your phone and you can sideload game ROMs.

https://get.playtil.es/

I have an Anbernic RG35xxH which is perfectly reasonable but needed some time investment to install a decent OS on (Knulli).

Look up @retrogamecorps for excellent setup guides and hardware comparisons.

Playtiles Season 2: New Controller, New Games

The stick-on gamepad that turns your phone into a handheld console. €60+ in curated indie games. Ships April 2026.

@robb I got a miyoo mini plus and replaced the os with onion os, works a treat

@robb I like my Miyoo Mini and Miyoo Mini Plus but if I were getting one today I’d probably go with a TrimUI Brick

(I hear the newer Miyoo with a hinge is good too but I don’t trust budget hinges to last very long)

@robb I was gifted a Miyoo Mini Plus and it’s wonderful! It runs onion OS 😊
@robb I’m late here but I’d get a mini Miyoo. Put onion is on it.
@ezwal Thats what I have on the way 👍

@robb Great. You ordered very quickly after my suggestion lmao.

It’s great for GB, NES, SNES and those gens.

Oh also it runs Pico8 natively. So grab that and check out Solitomb, Celeste, etc
