I was really bummed about seeing the TV series Shetland on britbox.

When I read the Ann Cleeves books years ago, I had a very different mental picture of Jimmy Perez and Duncan. Specifically, I was sure Jimmy was Hispanic, had an imposing mustache, and always wore a fedora hat, and he identified as an outsider. In the TV series, he is very different. For Duncan, it was less of a disconnect, but still it was a distractingly different appearance.

Had to stop watching the show after just 2 episodes in, because I couldn't stop dwelling continually on my internal disconnect. It's a shame, because it's set in a beautiful place.

@AncTreat5358 yes, shame. Especially because Jimmy grew up on Fair Isle, and Ann Cleeves suggested his father may have been descended from survivors of a wrecked Spanish Armada ship. I hope you’ll try the series again.

@cmorris Ah, that's where I got that idea of a Hispanic/Spanish origin! Glad it wasn't imagined.

I just might give it another go with its own merits in a while.

@AncTreat5358: And do pay a visit to the Shetland islands if you can!
@cmorris That would be a dream come true! Anything UK or UK-adjacent, actually.
@AncTreat5358: if you go, take the overnight ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick, Shetland. I see this interview with Ann Cleeves: https://www.northlinkferries.co.uk/shetland-blog/ann-cleeves-interview/#:~:text=I%20wanted%20a%20central%20character,ancestors%20was%20a%20Spanish%20survivor.
