I was a bit bored today and so I set up 4 qemu VMs with OS X 10.0 through 10.3.

It's really interesting to see how the OS has changed over time...

@82mhz Ah, pictorial evidence that Safari is the new Internet Explorer 😆
@82mhz I remember those interfaces as a kid and they where so pretty, they also felt very close to what a desktop would be. Now they look like a a supposed sleek advertisement made interface.
@82mhz At least, native apps on those didn't look like backside of a phone with full width camera bump. Oh, also had consistent corner radius.
/me glances at latest one
@82mhz essentially, I stopped using OSX when the topbar stopped being silver.

@contaminase @82mhz

Which version was that?

I loved Leopard and Snow Leopard. It started going crappy when Lion came out, and I don't even recognize it anymore.

Every time I see a laptop with a bloody notch in it, I'm slightly tempted to chuck it into the nearest body of water... or toilet. XD

If I had a lot less inhibition and a lot more muscle, I might be tempted to say, "You bought a laptop... with a NOTCH in it. How effing stupid do you feel right now?!?"

Fortunately, I'm not that rude. Or crass.

Or maybe unfortunately. XD

@rl_dane @82mhz if only I remember. 2018 it must be.

Well, regarding the notch - how else do you install a camera better than 720p into a 1500+ USD laptop in 2021?

@rl_dane @contaminase @82mhz Snow Leopard will forever hold a spot in the computing corner of my heart. 😎

@82mhz I was there for parts of that, and I definitely remember every release to feel like some visual progress was made. Granted, that was partly because of the CRT-influenced pinstriping being removed first, and after that the always rather dubious "brushed metal" for Safari and the Finder being phased out. They should've stopped then and there ;)

IIRC 10.3 where they introduced the brushed metal Finder, so we're still a good way away from perfection. It was more than made up by Exposé, though. Best feature ever, for a long, long while.

@mhd
Funny enough I never used any of these systems back in the day, I was never a Mac user. But I still feel weirdly nostalgic for them, there is just a beauty and simplicity about them that's missing today.
@82mhz Ciao, i loved the Aqua UI back then, had some used Powermacs in the 2000's.. many greetings from braunschweig in germany 🙃
@saderon69 Ciao, Grüße zurück aus Nürnberg in Richtung Norden ;)
