What is the oldest Linux distro?

#fediverse #linux #foss #question

@Ciela Slackware was very early, possibly the first.
@hamishtpb @Ciela Slackware was based on SLS so it can’t be first. looks like Slackware early summer 93, Debian late summer 93, Red Hat (not RHEL) 95. So I guess Debian is the oldest one with relevant market share
@hamishtpb @Ciela slackware is oldest still active

@Ciela

Slackware was 93 and Red Hat was 94.

@Ciela still actively maintained? Slackware.
@Ciela I would bet on a slackware but maybe Debian was there first :-)
@mikabxl @Ciela there were distributions before slackware too, but that's the oldest one still actually running

@Ciela

retired: SLS
community based: Slackware (true to its values), Debian (relevant to the market)
commercial/corporate: Redhat

@Ciela the first organized distribution, I think Slackware.

You still had to compile, but it was all you needed, there.

Softlanding Linux System (SLS) is (probably?) the first linux distro. Slackware is the oldest linux distro that is still being maintained. If you're curious there's lots of people active on #slackware on liberachat and linuxquestions.org.
Small fun fact: this message is actually coming to you from a Slackware server, running on an ancient Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) located in the basement of my house. My whole presence on the Fediverse is powered by Slackware.

@thoe

I have been running a couple of very long term analysis programs on #slackware 15.0 :) These will run for much longer.

This was typed on #NetBSD which I have 11.0 RC2 on. These are my 2 favorite systems.

@thoe I believe MCC Linux just has SLS beat, and I for one shall cleave most fervently to the theory that it originated in the Marylebone Cricket Club and not Manchester university's Computing Centre.
yeah, still a lot of people using Slackware, very active community
