All my experiences with flies have heretofore involved being annoyed or disgusted by them, but the evening before last, I was outside and I witnessed a thirsty housefly land at the edge of a splash of water I had made while watering my plants.

It walked forward and began to drink. I couldn't see its drinking directly, but i could see the surface of the water quivering as the fly slaked its thirst at the end of a hot day.

I dunno, flies are still gross and annoying, but I'm thinking about them differently now.

@MLE_online Misread this initially as β€œfiles” and am still having Feelings.
@20002ist paper files? computer files? metal rasps?

@MLE_online There are some cool flies if you look for them.

@bosquebill yeah, i should not paint diptera with such a broad brush. I see some very cool flies in my garden. It's just the houseflies giving the rest of them a bad name
@MLE_online Biting flies are no fun either!
@bosquebill yea, fuck those guys, but at least they don't come in the house
@MLE_online @bosquebill I blame Seth Brundel.
@n8dly Have you seen the 'original?' Sometime in the 1950's if I remember right.
@bosquebill I have not, but I know Vincent Price is in it, so I should rectify that!
@n8dly It's pretty cheesy, as I recall, though it's been many, many, many years since I saw it!
@MLE_online I have, in past springs, noticed small ants in our bathroom, and when I looked closer, they were going up to the sink and drinking the splashed water there. And after a week, they were gone.

@MLE_online I have a thought about flies.

We tend to think of insects as something barely above simple automata. Their brains are so simple, they can't possibly have complex inner lives or experiences.

But what if we flip that around? Imagine a brain so simple, any positive feedback becomes all-encompassing, an overwhelming and undiluted joy that reverberates through their entire nervous system.

Maybe the humble housefly is capable of an ecstasy we can't even begin to imagine.

I love flies. I also love to kill them when they start buzzing around my head. Natural selection, baby!
