#RibbonOfMemes have gone and done #TheShining, which I will listen to.

It's a curious film. I'm not much of a fan of Kubrick, even though his films are clearly meticulously made. I rewatched the Shining about a year or so ago and ended up watching it again.

The presence of absent indigenous people is striking and also implied child abuse.

Probably Jack Nicholson's best performance who's an actor I don't rate much.

Storywise it just starts then comes to an end. It's more of insanity slowly possessing a man.

Anyway, I'll listen to what Memes has to say.

Ribbon of Memes: The Shining (1980)

Yee! i agree with a lot of that. Not my favourite movie, nor the most horrifying horror movie, and generally overrated.

Still, there's something I find compelling about The Shining. It still feels like it has a powerful message even though it's not necessarily the most enjoyable movie to watch.

I did enjoy the book however. Part of the ending I did find predictable and a bi corny, but I did enjoy the books.

I kind of wonder about #Kubrick.

He's regarded as one of the greatest film makers yet I don't really rate any of his movies much.

Regular readers of my Mastodon toots will know that I've never actually seen the entirety of 2001 -- at least, I don't think I have. The last time it was on TV I fell asleep and woke up at the end. It's the middle part I'm not sure of.

But with Kubrick, I wonder if people truly like his films. Spartacus is supposed to be good and I haven't seen it.

Are any of his films actually good?

Fundamentally Kubrick is a satirist. Full metal jacket is incredible and horrifying and true. Dr Strangelove is iconic and hilarious, horrifying and true, Clockwork Orange had it's Streissand effect but nevertheless brilliant and twisted - and true. The Shining is the creative's horror, for all the valid critique of plot, and it rings true of the dull rage of writer's block. Eyes Wide Shut is fucking Epstein - and of course, also true.

Barry Lyndon - slow, slow, slow - but beautiful photography. I guess that Thackeray meant that as a satire too, but I'm not sure the satire comes across in the film.

@linuxgnome Sounds interesting but slow slow slow doesn't really sell it to me. @anilmc
