What’s the #Fediverse take on #anonimity in #socialmedia?

Is it better to stay #anonymous, or to use your real name and #identity?

Curious how others navigate this.

@acallegaro I’ve decided to not hide, and to take an explicit stand for the values I consider important. But then I’m a white cishet dude living in a quiet place. I totally get it when others make different choices. With all the data mining going on, truly protecting your privacy is an uphill battle, that’s part of my deliberation: I might as well try to reach some like minded people.

@acallegaro

At the beginning everybody used to be anonymous, it has been Facebook and Youtube that pushed energetically toward the opposite position, establishing the shift.

Unless you are a professional that need to be recognized, being exposed as the real you only leverage the big surveillance business regardless if you are on privative social media platform or on the Fediverse.

@acallegaro as a privacy advocate, who wants to speak to many of the groups that are the most in harms way, I find I need to be as transparent as I can be about who I am to help gain trust. I maintain privacy by controlling what I share, and how. But I have long left being anonymous.
