"These vulnerabilities are exacerbated by the use of just-in-time supply chains and the funnelling of much of the world’s trade through a number of chokepoints. Some people have long warned that the strait of #Hormuz, alongside the Suez canal, Turkish straits, Panama canal and straits of Malacca, are critical chokepoints, whose obstruction would threaten the flow of #food" -- even more than usually important piece by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

We’re letting big corporations gamble with our lives. Act now, or the food could run out

The fragility of the global food system fills me with dread – and the war with Iran has exposed just how close to collapse it is, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The Guardian

When the international food system collapses -- and I agree with George, this is now more or less inevitable -- it will be impossible to feed cities. There won't be enough #food.

Most rural areas, especially if sparsely populated, will still be able to feed themselves, but without surplus to export.

Of course, what normally happens in such circumstance is that armed men seize food from rural areas and transport it to cities, where it isn't sufficient, so everyone starves.

@simon_brooke as a food producer nearly all my working life I have had plenty of time to ponder this.
