This Volkswagen 181 from 1971 originally served with the German armed forces and eventually turned up in the UK, where it was recently on display at the Practical Classics resto show. Like the recently featured Mini Moke, it was an attempt to produce a light military utility vehicle using components from a cheap mainstream road car, in this case the Beetle.

@davidwilkins The German armed forces asked if VW could continue to make the WW2 Kübelwagen, but VW hadn't the capacity. So instead they hired Ghia to make the 181 from 1968. The military version kept the rear lights from the VW Type 2 1967-1971 throughout the model's production time (probably to make it possible to swap parts from all 181s), while the civilian version got the rear lights from the VW 1303 from 1973.
