From 2008 but just in: a cultural history of salt by Jakob Vogel. Any pointers to other cultural histories of substances are very welcome.

@joost_rekveld

say more about "substances"?

@inquiline I'm not being terribly specific, am I ;) ?
"Chemical substances" would be a bit more precise without being too restrictive: I had to think of the great book by Esther Leslie on Liquid Crystals and was wondering what other similar cultural histories exist..

@joost_rekveld

two that come to mind are Living Oil by Stephanie LeMenager, and American Plastic by Jeffrey Meikle. (related substances, US focus)

less cultural but for history of quinine & related drugs:

this is probably even less what you're looking for but there are at least a few chemical substances in this project, maybe bibliographies in the entries would turn things up?

@inquiline thanks so much for those pointers, none of which I knew, all of which look interesting. I will investigate ! That Feral Atlas is a great resource, amazing !

@joost_rekveld

glad to help! Feral Atlas is really cool!
