What books are required to wrap your head around the Rifts setting and lore? I've never played it, but I remember the ads with the robots that looked like something out of Terminator as a kid. It looked pretty cool and imaginative as settings go.

The core book (Rifts Ultimate Edition) is a good place to start. It works as a good primer; after that it depends on which world books and source books look interesting. But the RUE has a good mix of magic and technology, wizards and cyborgs and robots.
