Just a point on Apple celebration of 50 years. They were not always inclusive, screen reader access cdid not come to the Mac platform until 2005 from Apple itself.
@Woody Glad you said that. Many people think they're the cat's meow for accessibility. It did take quite a while for them to get there and even today there are growing pains.
@mcourcel Yes also a bit of a cultural difference between Microsoft and Apple, the head of accessibility at Microsoft actually does have a disability.,
@Woody Yup and she's amazing!
@mcourcel She absolutely is, I had the pleasure of meeting her a few years ago and absolutely fantastic person.
@Woody Yup, I met her before she was even leading that team, but I knew she would one day. I was at one of the first round tables that Microsoft had hosted. That was so cool!
@Woody I agree, you actually had to load a speech program onto the Apple 2E, just to make the computer talk.
@Woody Not to mention, the screen reading software was rudementary at that time.
@carrottop1023 Absolutely, then there was outspoken for the Mac for system six, seven, and sort of for eight, but when system nine came around that was the end of Out Spoken from Berkeley Systems.
@Woody Oh, never heard of that one before.
@Woody I’ve done my best to point out on podcasts and in writing, the long gaps in Apple accessibility, as the company not only celebrates 50 years, but tries to get a kind of credit for 40 years of accessibility, because they created some sort of accessibility office in 1985.
@Shelly Thanks, that's very much appreciated, as I was starting to think I was the only one smile.
@Woody With respect, they are not inclusive now. VO for OSX is, without a doubt, the worst of the popular screen readers. VO for the iPhone is better but is often full of bugs to the point where upgrading when the updates come out is actually risky for those of us who rely on it. Apple's accessibility is a good deal of talk with only some action to back it up. I would be overjoyed to use a mac and have tried several times, but have always found it either very slow or explicitly stating it's busy/not responding. @TheQuinbox
@techsinger @Woody @TheQuinbox Somone or somebodys shojuld put a couple of beans in Sarah Herlinger's ears. I've heard from a lot of you that VO on the Mac has been a royal PITA as of late.
@Woody Hi. I am not finding the issues with busyness or slowness on my MacBook air M3 or my mini M2. I'm wondering what could be the cause because I don't think this is universal. Also, I'm definitely an Apple fan girl but no they are far from perfect. At the risk of opening a can of worms that may or may not be legit, wasn't there some kind of lawsuit that came upon Apple because the iPhone was not accessible? Every company comes with its warts and wrinkles. But, Braille support, on the hole has been really good most of the time and I can't always say that about the other mobile platform I also use. :-)
@CreativeChris What I was more getting it is that they claimed to have been fully inclusive for 40 years which is actually not correct.
@CreativeChris I guess 20 years for inclusive accessibility doesn't sound as good as 40 years smile.
