This is described as a 'reboot' but from the actual report it sounds like an #Xfiles continuation…? https://deadline.com/2026/03/himesh-patel-danielle-deadwyler-x-files-ryan-coogler-1236766385/ cc @LoneLocust @fusionpatrol

@simonwood @LoneLocust Carter, inspired by Kolchak, created something new that could and would be viewed by people with no knowledge of Kolchak, and no baggage.

A reboot/sequel to X-files ain’t that.

@podcast @LoneLocust Sequel ain’t. But a reboot is.

I’d still be interested in a sequel though, it worked for Doctor Who…

@simonwood @podcast But it does rely/trade upon/traffic in nostalgia or familiarity with “The X-Files”

(Yes, new people can find it independently, but that’s not why you brand it X-files.)

@LoneLocust @podcast The quote specifically acknowledges the nostalgia. But it needn’t rely on familiarity any more than Doctor Who did in 2005, which was very focused on a brand new audience.
@simonwood @podcast Yes, but it’s not your experience, it’s the “creator’s” intention I’m referencing.
@LoneLocust @podcast Well you’ve lost me there.

@simonwood you make something wholly new (even if you’re inspired by something) and you have a clean slate.

You make something based on something else you are intentionally letting someone else do some of the lifting and you’re bringing along baggage.

There’s a place for both, I respect one considerably more than the other.

@LoneLocust My point is that that would apply to Doctor Who then, but that doesn’t really chime with me.

It’s almost the opposite in that Doctor Who had a poor reputation that needed to be overcome. Of course if Carter had just decided to continue Kolchak, I’d probably have taken a lot more persuading the watch it…

@simonwood “For Coogler, a big reason for revisiting X-Files is nostalgia. ‘Chris Carter will tell you, he was trying to make Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and for me that's what it's all about: When you as an artist [are] trying to capture something that you were influenced by and make something totally new.’

You don’t see the bullshit arrogance in this comparison? He can’t “make something new” if he’s remaking, rebooting, sequeling the X-Files.
