Mark Carney greenlights gas-powered AI data centres: an unholy marriage of climate-wrecking fossil fuels and society-destabilizing tech. This is completely irresponsible.

@atomicker
Geothermal electricity seems like a perfect match for datacentres.
@NMBA @atomicker Burn the data centers. That will produce enough power.

@NMBA If we must have AI data centres -- which, given the current state of AI, I would argue we absolutely do not -- then solar / wind / geothermal etc would be the responsible way to go. (Though data centres' overconsumption of water would be another serious problem to solve.)

Burning fossil fuels to power AI chatbots is an act of climate arson, married to an act of social destabilization. There's nothing salvageable here.

As if Alberta isn't already having enough trouble with shortage of water. And storage of industrial effluent from the tar sands.

@atomicker

@atomicker considering where gas costs are now....I think he did this because it doesn't matter anymore.
They are not gonna be financially viable.
@peteriskrisjanis Oh I wouldn't worry about that -- Carney has already increased public subsidies to fossil fuel projects of all kinds (breaking the explicit commitment he made during the election). He will, no doubt, be entirely willing to spend even more of our money to support these destructive, dead-end projects.
