You can get de-thorned varieties. I ran into some years ago before I knew what they are. Found their characteristic seed pods on the ground and wanted to know what the tree was. They didn't have any thorns. Were located by a city owned water tower I was working at...

It’s a good, tough tree for light shade. The thornless varieties are good, but if they are not also seedless you’ll get offspring with thorns. And that’s a problem!

Conditions around here must not be quite to their liking. I've not spotted any young ones and the tree nearby drops seed pods. I've found seeds in the pods before but not tried planting any...
