I've talked myself into a circle on my refusal to buy housing stuff for real cash in #WorldOfWarcraft. The principle isn't that I won't spend real money for virtual items, as I've spent real money for in-game content like faction/race changes, the fiery motorcycle mount, etc. I don't do that often, and I don't do it impulsively.

Over time, I have continually enjoyed the things I've spent on, so I feel validated that I didn't "waste" the money any more than you waste money renting a movie for your enjoyment. In that sense, I've spent far less on these items than someone would on regular nights out.

Maybe it's just that housing in-game hasn't proved itself to be more than a throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks feature yet. Housing and neighborhoods have been ghost towns so far, and having the coolest grave in the graveyard doesn't change the fact that everyone's dead there. (I'll keep working on that analogy.)

@binsk I was excited for the feature at first, but with the costs and XP flubs, and the real money piece, I barely even go there anymore.

I had a similar feeling in FFXIV with their version of garrisons. I visit my guild housing because there is a group of people who monthly change things up and it's amazing.

My housing in SWTOR I have multiple, and I spend most of my time in my first one, and little in the one they gated behind time/quests.

I see a theme here. The ones that are for fun, I like. What holds me back on WoW is I quit it for two years during Shadowlands because I couldn't take how bad they made my life as a Necrolord DH when they promised parity. That burned FOMO right out of my system, so now I only sub for as long as I'm enjoying things on a monthly basis and they get no cash otherwise.

@pauliehedron houses aren't social as implemented. hell, I barely look at people's transmogs in wow, and those people are always around in hubs. if housing is a monument to your own greatness in Wow, I don't care that much. It's something to do that isn't tv.

@binsk I was always hoping for instanced guild halls even back in Legion, sort of like what was done with Order Halls, so we had a place we could hang out in game that was guildie while we hung out in voice chat. Might have helped things be a bit less cliquey.

I'm on Area-52 mostly, where you?

@pauliehedron out on nordrassil. I started out there years ago, and I'm sorta just there. if they made it easier/cheaper to move realms, I would.
