Ooh so that’s neat, the #NDP leadership voting system is ranked voting. has it always been that way? how well do you think it works?

@Toxic_Flange I only joined earlier this year specifically so I could vote; so I don't know. But yes, I agree its pretty cool.

In any case, we'll find out this Sunday!

@Toxic_Flange I remember it being ranked when Jagmeet won.
@mister914 what do you think? A fair system , something that could scale country wide ?
@Toxic_Flange I only used it the one time. I didn't see a difference honestly. It saves us from round after round of actually voting though.

@Toxic_Flange Granted this will age me a bit, but I believe some kind of ranked or instant-run-off has been used after the 2003 election of Jack Layton.

Previous to that I don't recall the exact system or even if that was done in 2003 but I know that was the last one with weight votes for labour groups before moving fully to one member one vote.

@Tweakedenigma how do you feel about this system? feels fair or a way for it to be gamed? think it’s a good enough system to be rolled out provincially or federally?

@Toxic_Flange Depends what you mean?

If you mean for electing party leaders I believe most other parties (including provincial wings have gone this route already.

For MPs or MLAs, I don't mind this system but it would have to be done through one of the proportional methods for me to think it was a good option.

So something like STV yes, just winner take all ranked (better than today, but not good enough).

@Tweakedenigma well in Nova Scotia it’s still the First Past the Post type situation. i’d love for that to change

@Toxic_Flange For party leaders? I know the 2016 NDP leaders election there was won on the second ballot.

Or do you mean for MLAs? Cause yeah MLAs and MPs everywhere are still FPTP, however winner take all ranked ballots aren't much of an improvement, though it is slightly better.

*edit- just my opinion it's not much better, as I am really looking for a proportional system.

@Tweakedenigma sorry i meant MLAs and MPs , not party systems. I consider the different way parties vote leaders as experiments to be potentially scaled up :) And i’m with you on the desire to have a better proportional representation system.

@Toxic_Flange Yeah in that regard anything would be better than the current system.

I would just say though electing an executive vs a body with parties is a different animal.

Fair vote Canada has a better breakdown than I could give:
