I've got to go see an ophthalmologist. Making the appointment has been on my to do list for longer than I’d like to admit. I finally decided to call this morning (because I was procrastinating doing something else, not because I'm being particularly proactive today). I'm on hold.

As much as I enjoy trying things out w/ technology, I'm still afraid of the new iOS hold feature. It's cracking me up because I wouldn't want *them* to have to wait too long for me to then pick up. Meanwhile...

I’ve now been on hold for more than ten minutes. So perhaps I could revisit being concerned that it would take too long for the system to alert me someone was there and for me then to pick up.

Pretty sure their hold message hasn't been updated in years. I suppose it is possible that they all wear masks and “use gloves, when appropriate." Further, it is possible that they also want all their patients to wear masks. My guess is this hold message is from years ago, however.

They're describing their extensive disinfectant processes, etc. Which, I mean great... I'm a big fan. Just thinking this is a super outdated hold message. I also could ask about a free Lasic (sp?) examination, or focal implant, or... all sorts of things they want to advertise to me, as I continue to wait. We are at over 13 minutes now.

Thinking I should probably hang up. They probably forgot about me. "We value the personal relationships we build with each of our patients.”

Do you, though?

Yeah. I hung up and called back after 15 minutes. “That must have been someone else," was the reply, after I mentioned that I had been waiting.

I made an appointment. Given that I don't know off the top of my head other doctors w/ this specialty. Not to mention, hard to say the correlation between front office quality and care quality.

She said, “We'll send you the information about the appointment with the paperwork."

Umm... I asked how that would work....

We had already established that I wasn't in their system anywhere. As in my primary care physician's systems don't “talk" to theirs. So I wasn't trying to be sarcastic when I asked how she would be able to follow up with the paperwork, given that I wasn't in their system and she hadn't asked for any contact details.

Her answer, “We use a third-party system for that. But if you want, you can give me your email and I can also send it to you."

I'm succumbing to this not going well. But I just don't have the energy to try somewhere else.

Now I've got to go find the quote that talks about how important imagination is so that we can build the kind of futures that we want. Because this ain't it.

Nobody wants this. Or sometimes we think we do. But if we parse out how that would really work, we really don't want this.

I can't find the quote I was thinking of... But I did find this one from @harold which fits perfectly, as well.

“The skills required to live in a world dominated by complex and non-routine work requires — creativity, imagination, empathy, and curiosity.”

Yeah. I had exactly zero of these going on in this now 30 minute experience of just trying to schedule an appointment, let alone actually receive the medical care.

I should also note before I stop, that I am among the privileged in the US. I have healthcare/insurance. There are far too many who do not... and those who have it, but at an enormous cost...
