Android-Based GrapheneOS Refuses Age Verification, May Exit Regions That Enforce It

The privacy-focused Android fork would rather lose market access than collect user data at setup.

It's FOSS

@itsfoss

Love the energy
But I feel like they will need more than f-droid for apps
That's my biggest concern here

@bussphomet @itsfoss Well, they ship with Accrescent, and are very critical about f-droid...

@itsfoss @rubinjoni

I guess what I meant was
Doing something like the furiphone does and have native linux software capability and android app capability.
Accrescent is still android based.

@itsfoss these politicians with their names in the esptein files want to pRoTecT cHiLdReN
@itsfoss one of the issue with this is, should a bad group if people like pedophiles, terrorist, scammers.. Use GrapheneOS. Is GrapheneOS ready to accept this?
I use GrapheneOS and getting worried about being completely open. But to what end.
@VinCep73 People use cars to kidnap and do all sorts of bad stuff, do we have issues with cars? GrapheneOS is just a tool like cars.

@itsfoss @VinCep73

Mate the actual government are worse than criminals at this point.
I feel like it doesn't matter.
Freedom or death.
And by death I mean theirs.

@VinCep73 I have a friend that discovered GrapheneOS just as an OS that isn't controlled by friends of Trump. My friend doesn't even care about privacy.

GrapheneOS is becoming more popular every day. The association to bad people is slowly fading. Being open about using GrapheneOS makes it happen faster.

@itsfoss yet I am apprehensive about it.
If GrapheneOS is pressured to ask for authenticating, it doesn't mean they will have to pass on the information.
The government's will get your information if they want it. Google, apple, Microsoft, meta... Are the ones which you should be most worried. America is not the world.

@VinCep73 @itsfoss This is the exact type of language that authoritarians and fascists use to eliminate dissent.

"Show me the OS and I'll find you the crime"

Are you really that worried about protecting the kids, or do you perhaps have ulterior motives?

@libreovergratis @itsfoss I appreciate the passion behind your response, and I absolutely agree that privacy tools like GrapheneOS are essential for protecting individuals from surveillance, censorship, and abuse. My concern isn’t about restricting access to these tools—far from it. I use GrapheneOS myself because I value privacy and security, and I believe everyone should have the right to protect themselves.
@libreovergratis @itsfoss My question was more about how we, as a community, can address the reality that any tool—no matter how well-intentioned—can be misused. It’s not about blaming the tool or its developers, but about recognizing that bad actors exist and discussing how to mitigate harm without compromising the core values of privacy and openness. For example, how do we ensure that the benefits of GrapheneOS outweigh the risks, and how can we educate users about ethical use?
@libreovergratis @itsfoss I’m genuinely curious about this balance, not looking to undermine privacy or promote authoritarianism. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how we can approach this constructively.
@itsfoss Maybe that's why it's banned in the U.S.

@itsfoss @MrGR

Pretty sure that's France
There is literally an online shop that ships phones with graphene pre-installed to the U.S.

@itsfoss How does this OS level age verification even works? You just set in OS "Yeah I'm 18+ years old" and you're on your merry way or do you need to somehow actually prove it with ID or shit? If it's just a toggle with no verification just as a tool for parents to use as parental control it's not really problematic, but I'm sure there's already abuse planned with it on corporate/government levels isn't it?

@itsfoss @rejzor

Thats the thing
Its all fucking stupid, it won't work.
We are either back to the 90s where you have a birthday slider to lie too or they try to push some chinese level bullshit and end up with a Nepal.

But I guess if we are speaking of the american ones and not the brazil one the american ones seem more honor system (its still overreach though). Brazil is inept though its one of the great piracy countries, they will try to enforce it and then give up like they always do. As for the americans that shit will get torn up in court if amendments don't kill them before they are even born.

@itsfoss if needed, I think the users should verify it's age to the system admin (I know, tend to be the same person).

@itsfoss US lawmakers at their finest!

How they restrict kids using OS, but allow them to bear arms ?

How is it possible that a person can't drink until 21 yo, but can film porn movies above 18+ yo ?

@itsfoss

does that mean users in the UK should download an image now in case it is blocked in future?

@itsfoss @rapsneezy

I think the people of the UK need to pull a V for Vendetta and start shanking their political leaders in the streets.

But yeah maybe
Either that or get a jolla or something.

@itsfoss love seeing projects stand firm on privacy principles like this.
@itsfoss cool, still looking for something I can install on an existing phone instead of having to buy a pixel
