huh. apple discontinued the mac pro. not announced a replacement, not stopped taking orders because a new model's coming down the pipe, just hard discontinued it.
end of an era, i guess, although the last mac pro was frankly a silly machine
@pikhq what's the replacement? mac studio?
@whitequark yep, always has been. even when the m2 mac pro came out it couldn't do anything a mac studio couldn't, and the mac studio's $3k cheaper
and now, the mac studio got a refresh and the mac pro didn't
@pikhq same (i'm a silly machine)
@pikhq I am not sure this fully parallels the USB switch they made before but it feels like it could be for most users. aside from video cards it seems like everything else is either built in or external now

@pikhq for a long time the one advantage was PCIe slots, and… I just never saw any quantity of cards to put in them?

I really enjoyed the “load up a bunch of shit into your computer” era, ProTools systems with 16 slot expansion chassis, stuff like that.

@0x09 that's not even much of an advantage, since there's outright nothing you can do with the M* mac pro you can't with a mac studio and a thunderbolt-to-pcie box, and the combo of a mac studio and pcie box is cheaper
@0x09 sonnettech even makes a rack mountable combo unit for this exact purpose, if you want it to look nicer/be easy to rack mount
