I heard a news commentator say that drivers' licenses wouldn't be accepted as ID for voting in "45 states" if the 'Save America Act' passes, so I did some research 🧐🤿

Verdict: Claim seems true ⬅️

Not even those with stars or other indication you're legit would be acceptable since they don't prove citizenship.

And only 5 states have "enhanced drivers licenses" - Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont & Washington.

Only some driver's licenses usable under SAVE America Act

Posts circulating on social media claim driver’s licenses could not be used for voter registration in federal elections under the SAVE America Act, legislation that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering. But this is missing context. Driver’s licenses that indicate citizenship, such as an enhanced license, could be used for voter registration in a limited number of states if the SAVE America Act passes. However, those without such a license or who live in states or territories that don’t issue them would need to provide additional documentation.

AP News

Per the DHS's website (in the AP article in previous post), "enhanced drivers licenses" aren't standard. People must apply for them. 👀

AND if they have to pay for those special drivers' licenses in order to vote,

➡️ Wouldn't that effectively be a poll tax? ‼️

(Note: It looks like other forms of ID that prove citizenship, like birth certificates (I suppose combined w/ official picture ID), would also be acceptable. Same with passports, which people have to pay for 😐)

By the way,

Poll taxes are illegal in the United States, having been outlawed "under section 10 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965."

And the "24th Amendment, ratified January 23, 1964, abolished the use poll taxes for Federal elections in the United States."

And an aside having to do with #privacy

According to the #DHS website, the "enhanced drivers licenses" that prove #US citizenship include an RFID chip that signals a "secure system" to "pull up your biographic and biometric data for the CBP officer as you approach the border inspection booth" when crossing the US border.

So that's great... let's carry a government RFID everywhere we go.

@dalfen NY, at least, provides an RF protrctive sleeve with enhanced licenses. I'm not 100% convinced that's enough to block the signal, but I assume it at least decreases the range at which it can be read.
