* said "that looks like an MSL altitude, is the address you found [a deep offset into an 8+MB object, don't ask] var1 or var2?" It was var2.
* said "oh this line is probably the problem" and I loosely determined, with debug prints before and after that line, that he was right

the ultimate culprit is probably esoteric failure of a not-clean build, because our build process is dogshit, so I'm going to test that now and then go out and drink and tell everyone I know that my mentor is a goddamn wizard
nope, failing the same way. I went to my haunt and spent a little more time getting diagnostic info to send to mentor (lol, I've only been in the industry for 20 years. but he's been in for longer and also knows more about this project) while also drinking, because god I hate this sim.
