I'm experimenting with a local instance for my small town, and I have the same problem. I wish the Mastodon frontend and app could be rebranded more easily, but the second best solution would be what @CleoMenezesJr proposes.

@stefan's tool looks good, but I guess it's still too complicated for many.

Most people in my community don't really need to know the name of the server backend system (Mastodon).

That's just what Mastodon, the company, chose to name their community, hosted on a server, which is running the Mastodon software.

Try this: https://invite.jointhefediverse.net/?server=tutoteket.no

Arguably, this would be more useful with a Norwegian translation, which is unfortunately not available yet.

You might want to check out @newsmast too, and/or speak with @jaz about what he’s done with #TootWales!

You can’t even tell it’s #Mastodon under the hood. It’s terrible advertising for us and we love it 😉

@haubles Yes!

I see that it's probably not as good for promoting Mastodon, unfortunately. But the potential users I'm talking about (the ones who don't care about the software, but just want an invite link) are probably not the first to donate anyway.

I wish it was easier to remove the Mastodon branding, but keep something like "Powered by Mastodon" or "In the same network as Mastodon" clearly visible somewhere.

@ahaldorsen @haubles @stefan @CleoMenezesJr @andypiper @nick @matt @newsmast @teamtoot just so it's been said, this is what the web version (Mastodon) looks like by default to our community members, thanks to @nileane and the @TangerineUI we installed

@jaz

Beautiful 🧡

@ahaldorsen

IMO the important thing about keeping something like "powered by ActivityPub" or the Mastodon logo visible is making sure people understand that the things they post are pushed out to a broader network than just your community.

@stefan @CleoMenezesJr @andypiper @nick @matt @newsmast @teamtoot @nileane @TangerineUI

@haubles That's a very good point. How to communicate that without causing confusion is not trivial.

😜

I'd suggest getting a bunch of really smart people in a room to figure it out, but I've been in a few of those rooms and so far the Fediverse has come up with approximately 32,000 answers to that question :o)

Tooting my own horn, this is why I make stuff like this page: https://croeso.toot.wales/en/server-directory/

@jaz @ahaldorsen @stefan

Well they say people have to hear something between three and seven times before they actually remember it. So with our 32,000 methods, we’ll get the message across somewhere between 4,000 and 16,000 times🤪 onward!

@haubles @jaz @ahaldorsen @stefan Ultimately I’m aiming for a middle-aged smartphone users audience. Getting them to click links is tough, and asking them to configure an instance on the app will probably put almost everyone off.

It’s discouraging. 🥲

@haubles @ahaldorsen @stefan @CleoMenezesJr @andypiper @nick @matt @newsmast @teamtoot I take the view that that's a job for marketing and onboarding, not day-to-day in-app. (But generally agreed we can all do more to help people understand this as they approach and use the network)

(And we are pinging a lot of people at this point, if I reply again I'll drop anyone but OP and anyone who's actually spoken in thread)
