Santa Fe Caboose up for sale at a local Estate Sale.

(no, I don't have a backyard big enough).

#trainspotting

I wonder if anyone would notice this sign in the backyard. #railroads
So many signs
I mean, lots and lots of signs. And railroad stuff. #railroads
If you ever want to open up one of those kitchy Route 66 souvenir shops... Looks like this is the place to go, lol.
Hmm, there are two morse code keys in there. Among other stuff. I imagine the plae is chock full of random stuff.
Ship's wheel? Cowboy hat? Entire gas station replica buliding with gas pumps? Shelled Walnuts sign?

@ai6yr What an awesome collection!
@elaterite Almost a museum unto itself!

@ai6yr @elaterite
Some curation needed?

And I too bemoan the fact that my yard is too small

@PaulWermer @ai6yr For many years I fantasized about living in a caboose. I even checked on prices and delivery. Quite reasonable, I thought. That Santa Fe one looks nice. I figured it would be fairly easy to remodel the interior but when I looked at one up close I abandoned the idea. The narrow steps, door, and landing would be a problem. One could cut a hole in the side but that was too much to deal with. I liked the idea of sitting in the cupola reading or working on the computer. 🙂
@elaterite @PaulWermer @ai6yr The other problem is that you probably need to install a sturdy foundation, equivalent to ties and ballast used under railroad tracks. If you have them drop a caboose into your back yard, it will probably sink.

If your brand new train caboose does sink
It will really stink

@ai6yr @mattblaze @PaulWermer Ya, good point on the foundation. I was certainly going to place it on rails. Guess it would need a thick slab under the ground or an actually railway bed. Guess I would have had to hire a engineering firm to figure it out.
@mattblaze @elaterite @PaulWermer @ai6yr A dump truck of stone and a few old sleepers will do the trick however; as rail cars go, cabooses are pretty light.

@mattblaze

I recall visiting a house in the 80s, somewhere in the Sierra foothills. In the yard, there was an old caboose with a short section of track on ties underneath.

Probably still there?

@elaterite @PaulWermer @ai6yr I looked at the picture above and honestly felt like someone already had the idea of living in it. It even looks like they put in a bed or perhaps more than one even. Honestly... It doesn't look so terrible. I guess the getting in and out do present a problem though.
