Unpopular opinion: What if we don't restrict ourselves to do things that have "value".

@hannorein If we only do things that have value, we lose the humanity that was granted to us hundreds of thousands of years ago when the first humans put their hands on a cave and spit ochre at them. What kind of life is it if all we ever do is look at the ground?

Dreams and the search for knowledge is what drives us to see what's over the next hill. Yearning for answers to questions unanswerable is an inherent part of what it means to be human.

@hannorein

Very popular! With me at least. We provide the underpinning for philosophy. Not less, but also not more.

@hannorein we could also restrict ourselves to do things that do not destroy the environment, and astronomy in the current mega-instruments-for-marginal-precision-gains era is increasingly not one of these things. That's also a question of value of course.
