Enjoying my morning at Smith Rock State Park. Currently having breakfast at the top of Eagle’s Nest. First time here and it’s an awesome park so far. Planning to hike all the major trails today on a large loop.
I spent the morning mostly on BLM land climbing mountains. Time to head up the rock. Not gonna lie, the trail looks intimidating from below.
I know some of you all love to do this but it’s a big no thanks for me!

Red Wall on Smith Rocks - Yikes! This picture gives me the willies!

I once was edging along a narrow ledge in the desert, and I had to get around a protruding corner, or retrace a long sideways shuffle. As I rounded the corner, both hands clinging to rough spots on the rock face, I suddenly freed a 40lb slab, now supported only by my hands. Luckily, I was able to roll it to the side as I released it, so it didn't take out my feet.

I've more respect now for rotten rock.

@oldclumsy_nowmad That’s very scary! I haven’t done much desert or canyon hiking yet. I’m kinda scared of exposure like that and pretty risk adverse. I turn around pretty quickly if I’m nervous. But awesome you made it through!

@andrewbriscoe

Thanks, but it wasn't awesome, it was just luck!

I'm risk averse, too, very much. I haven't done any technical climbing, and usually don't even try anything that looks risky. But I love exploring in the desert, and sometimes the temptation to get to a difficult spot is just too much to resist.

Enjoy your explorations!
