every day I open the internet and spend 15-20 minutes cycling IP addresses in order to hit a winning combination that allows me to access all three (3) centralized services I regularly use to communicate with people, without one of them arbitrarily blocking me based on made up bullshit metrics
IP addresses: famously NOT supposed to be used as persistent identifiers exactly because of dumb shit like this

fuck anyone who does that, you're just doing things wrong.

fuck you again if you don't think you're wrong, because you definitely are, and your unchecked stupidity fucks up my life on a daily basis, assholes.

@froge At least when it comes to IP ranges assigned to ISPs, I agree.

  • Because 99,9% of all issues I had were due to shitty hosters like ClownFlare, not actual ISPs that server consumers or businesses.
@kkarhan if you block based on ASN or something similar which identifies a block of addresses I think this is fine, that's a reasonable identifier for a large group and if they cause you problems and things aren't improving just drop them that way

profiling people to guess some crappy user-to-ip binding is just clown shit, if you need to identify malicious traffic from consumer ISPs there are an uncountable number of better ways to approach it

@froge TBH, the only cases where I had to even consider that was for a payment processor as part of the "fraud prevention" (aka. combatting carding attempts), which usually checked how close the presumed location & address are.

  • But that's also not reliable as my ISP is constantly fudging that claimed address / location in a 100km radius and not never within 10km…
