After we documented children crawling through trains to get to school, the mayor of Hammond, Indiana, said train company Norfolk Southern pledged to help fund an overpass. Now the project is dead after the company reneged, he says.

Norfolk Southern denies making a commitment.

Walkway Over Dangerous Train Crossing Is Dead After Norfolk Southern Backtracks on Funds, Mayor Says

The mayor of Hammond, Indiana, says the rail company had promised to help pay for a pedestrian bridge after ProPublica and InvestigateTV documented dozens of children crawling through trains to get to school. The company denies making this pledge.

@ProPublica Why the hell is this legal?! This company knows what's happening, so their actions are clearly wilfully reckless at best. There are so many things they could easily do to solve this, and the politicians who refuse to force them to fix it are responsible too.

Meanwhile, near me, a footbridge was recently installed on a footpath on the edge of a small village, where the route around is 0.5 miles, because we have a policy of removing level crossings as much as possible for safety.
