I just noticed that the levels of background crackle on my HSS guitar, with volume and gain up but muting the strings with my hand, are noticeably lower with the pickup selector in position 5 as expected, but also on position 2 (neck + middle pickups). 1, 3, and 4 are all about equally crackly.

Could the blending of two sets of single coils be acting equivalently to a humbucker to cancel out interference? Or is that likely just a coincidence?

@i_cannot_today yeah frequently the middle position will be reverse-wound, reverse-polarity to the other two pickups (ie noise canceling). on an HSS it’s likely for neck and middle to be RWRP + a humbucker. so position 2 and 5 having hum canceling sounds correct.
@jepyang @i_cannot_today I love the sound of that jangly tone you get on position 2 I think it is.
