I desperately want to figure out FreeCAD, but every time I try it seems built for a different brain than mine.
Now that 1.1 is out, I will try again and I have a very simple thing to make.

Anyone have preferred tutorials that they would recommend?

@leroy start with mastering 2d sketches with constraints. From there you can learn simple extrudes and that will cover 90% of the basics. The assembly and multibody shennanigans are what get difficult.

@awfulOstrich it was a while since I last tried it (1.0 launch). But the 2D interface really didn’t work for me. Something about how it registered input was completely against how I normally use software.

I use Fusion360, Blender, game engines, art programs etc.

From the ‘changes in 1.1’ videos I’ve watches, it looks like they have changed selection, and I hope it makes it usable for me.

@leroy I'm the same way with blender. It just wouldn't click. I have a background in machine tools where milling operations corrolate to extrudes and turning operations are analogous to revolve operations. It still took 10 years of head banging to make frecad work for me, but it has gotten much better lately.
@leroy Freecad works for taking napkin sketches to 3d printable or laser cuttable designs, but it's not the best tool for modeling video game assets or artistic works.
@leroy my recommendation is to start with just the Part Design/Sketch workbench. That's the one which is most similar to other CAD. And I find myself using that for 90% of tasks

@leroy the mangojelly videos on YouTube are my usual recommendation.

They’re generally pretty up to date and there are a lot of them covering a lot of aspects of freecad.

Where did you get stuck? Maybe I can point you some where more specific.

@leroy Many people have found MangoJelly very helpful; he doesn't generally assume that you watch all his videos in order. He's also been making videos about the changes in 1.1.

If you prefer the written word, try @concretedog 's FreeCAD for Makers — it's not updated for the latest FreeCAD, but the core concepts in it haven't changed.
