@magicmarcy @Codeberg The infrastructure is free-to-use, but comes at the "cost" of giving back to the community - those are indeed our house rules, and this is how we use non-profit (donated) money as per our statutes.

Besides, other platforms are more monetarily expensive and don't offer you the entire source code under a free and open-source license to self-host if you don't agree with their price, right?

@n0toose @Codeberg Yes, that's all correct - I simply wanted to point out that a false comparison is being made here, as the goals and orientation are completely different. Codeberg is not a profit-oriented company – that's the difference.

@magicmarcy @Codeberg We don't see ourselves as "a GitHub alternative" because we play by different rules for the benefit of free and open-source projects, and that is what we market ourselves with (and that was the goal we were trying to make).

@n0toose @Codeberg Yes, I understand that - but using GitHub's negative aspect to draw attention to oneself when offering something completely different is, in my opinion, the wrong approach.

@magicmarcy @Codeberg One might say that they offer highly-processed corn flakes with chocolate chips and lots of added sugar, we offer muesli. We know that some will continue preferring the former instead of muesli (not everyone might want to eat that instead), but we can talk about how you might want to pick something with less added sugar and that we offer that.

Hm, if I weren't as tired I could've brought on "slop" into the comparison. Eh, whatever.

@magicmarcy @n0toose @Codeberg I don't know what shenanigans both of you are up to, but for me, codeberg is an alternative to github, and that seems pretty clear actually. The main pupose of these services being hosting git repositories.
