One of my biggest worries today is that decreasing job security and declining volunteerism are going to multiply one another in ways that severely undercut the fabric of our country. An early indicator: The diminishment of volunteer firefighting.

In times of stress & uncertainty, it's a smart move to circle the wagons & protect your family first. HOWEVER: I do believe that there are important parts of our culture that are built on people helping people, and doing so on a volunteer basis, and that those are being fast eroded. I wonder what the eventual impact of that all will be.
