Democrat Emily Gregory wins Florida race to represent Mar a Lago

Democrat Emily Gregory has won a special election for a Florida state House seat, flipping a district that is home to President Donald Trump’s estate, Mar-a-Lago. The Republican president endorsed Gregory’s rival, Jon Maples. Republican Mike Caruso, who resigned from the seat to become Palm Beach County’s clerk, won the district by 19 percentage points in 2024. Trump won the district by about 10 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. Democrats are celebrating the victory as the latest sign voters are turning against Trump and the GOP ahead of the midterm elections in November.

“Trump immediately distanced himself from the loss in a district he’d won by 17 points in 2024, saying “I’m not involved in that” even though he had endorsed the Republican candidate.”

@samlitzinger Granted, I live in a blue leaning area… but GOP council members showed up at my door stating that all of the GOP candidates for the open seat dropped out.

In their words, “being GOP is the kiss of death right now. You either denounce the Federal GOP and possibly doom your future career, or support it and doom your current career.”

They were hoping to “hold the spot” via petition, otherwise the Dems would run uncontested.

I hope that attitude spreads.
