@evanwolf @Daojoan This is honestly my favourite question of all time, and I think the answer involves failure tolerance. Not "learning from the mistakes of history", but accepting that failure is a necessary aspect of evolution, which we drive with every decision to do better next time. We get our own house in order, and trust that culture iterates from there.
