Google has news on what you will need to do for still being able to sideload apps:

* enable developer options
* confirm that you are not tricked
* restart phone and re-authenticate
* wait one day
* confirm with biometrics that you know what you are doing
* decide if you only want unrestricted installs for 1 week or forever
* confirm that you accept the risks
* enjoy the few apps that still have developers motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this

@DomHeadroom @grote xiaomi requires lots of BS to unlock bootloader.

you have to request permission to unlock it and wait 3-4 weeks. utter bullshit. i had one before and did lineageOS on it. it was brutal.

@tootbrute @grote I know I'm using a xiaomi device with lineageos right now, tho it's always a trade off, in the end you only need to unlock it once and then you replace the bootloader with uboot

@DomHeadroom @grote maybe they have gotten better. i had bad ride with it last time. i was on xiaom redmi 2 like 4 or 5 years ago.
