Protonmail works just fine without PlayServices. You can download .apk from F-droid or Proton's GitHub releases page.
My phone doesn't have PlayServices and the only thing that doesn't work in ProtonMail is notifications — would be cool if they supported UnifiedPush, but not a big deal for me, I check it myself every now and then.
