@alice two good friends are former investigative journalists, one is married to a newspaper editor

when I was dating they would vet people I went out with with a diligence usually reserved for statewide political candidates

there was absolutely no way I could stop them, but I did ask that they not tell me what they learned unless it raised safety concerns

this also did nothing to prevent dickhead behavior from any of the subjects, which remained an issue 😕

My wife's then-friends vetted me in person before things had progressed very far.
I was moved that they did that and felt close to all of them.
Awful things happened later but that's another story.
