In category What the Actual Fuck Even Is This:

Just had my annual eye exam. Went well as such things go, eyes are in decent shape (for values of "decent" meaning "yep I sure am still nearsighted AF and that's not getting any better as I get older"). Prescription hasn't significantly changed since my last exam. The doctor _did_ recommend I get a new pair of glasses, which I pretty much expected.

What I did not expect was to be told my current insurance apparently covers frames only every _two_ years. Although it would cover my getting _lenses_.

And... what? What the hell use is selling lenses to me without frames?

I did also learn that repurposing an older pair of glasses is actually a thing that can be done, by swapping out the older lenses in them for newer ones. But the cost for the lenses alone is still stupidly high.

THE AMERICAN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, everyone!

@annathepiper And, since you need to give the optician the reused frame for a while (hours to weeks, depending), you need to have an old pair of glasses you are not using. This doesn't work for new glasses wearers, for people who didn't know to plan for this or for other reasons did not keep some old frames around. And also I don't know about yours, but my old frames get beat up. And they are no longer my fashion choice. So I hate this policy.
@david42 Yeah, all of that. Three of my current four pairs of glasses are still in decent shape, and any of them I could consider expendable enough to swap new lenses into. So the other question here is just whether I want to commit to spending several hundred dollars for lenses. Because even without frames being involved, it's still stupidly expensive. Because AUGH.
