That is in line with traditional R-party doctrine that those who get the benefits ought to pay the costs.
In addition, Elon Musk offered to pay TSA salaries.
@adamshostack @rsalz I had not realized that there is already a TSA surcharge on airline tickets.
I am usually more amenable to arguments of the form "TSA benefits everyone, not just airlines [and passengers]", but in this case the locus of benefits is so tightly defined that it does make sense for airlines to pay the costs of TSA. (We also often forget that TSA deals with airfreight in addition to human-freight.)
(I haven't flown commercially for several years - it's actually kinda nice to be relieved of that travel nightmare.)
