We use 32 million ha of land globally (ca. 1 Germany) to grow plants for biofuels. This equals 1.400 TWh per year, or 4% of our global energy consumption for transport.

If we'd use the same area for PV, we could produce 32.000 TWh per year, already considering the potential yield for the areas where we grow bio fuel plants.

For comparison: the entire world consumed 31.000 TWh of electricity in 2024.

I love such comparisons.

The solution is definitely not to plaster the entire area with PV. It's just showing the mind-blowing contrast. Another great factor: If we electrify large parts of the transport sector, we reduce the energy consumption drastically.

@bastianallgeier PV can be build vertically, the space between panels used to plant food and homes for insects. PV built vertically, facing east-west, will produce electricity mostly when it’s needed: in the mornings and evenings.

@bastianallgeier Great thing is, that both can co-exist! Nearby the State of Bavaria is scientifically testing and comparing different types of setups (regular 20deg but on 5m high poles, 100% vertically, linear tracking) in regards of efficiency, costs, maintainability and of course how well the crops grow. Im Rahmen eines von dem Staatsministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft, Forsten und Tourismus, dem Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie sowie dem Staatsministerium für Wohnen, Bau und Verkehr geförderten Projekts wurde 2024 die Agri-PV-Anlage am Staatsgut Grub in Betrieb genommen. Die Agri-PV-Anlage ergänzt das Konzept der Bayerischen Staatsgüter, dass auf angewandte Forschungs- und Wissensvermittlung basiert. Zusammen mit dem TFZ, welches für die wissenschaftliche Begleitung zuständig ist, liegen nun die ersten Erfahrungen vor.

@bastianallgeier Yes, "biofuel" is a scam; e.g. in the US there's a lot of corn used for it and it's basically a roundabout way for the government to subsidize agriculture.

It's also way more environmentally damaging than just using dead dinosaurs.

@bastianallgeier — That seemed to be a similar story in this other video that was doing the rounds. Seeing these things always makes me wonder: do the people in control of these decisions just never see videos like this? Like, in Ireland, everyone’s up in arms about reducing petrol costs, and the govt is going to relax levies. But why not have been encouraging farmers to build solar farms? Is it because we don't have enough light? So frustrating!
