The FCC ban will affect the import of all new, foreign-made consumer routers, according to the agency's chair Brendan Carr. But the FCC did not provide evidence to show that U.S.-made consumer routers are more secure than routers developed overseas.

@zackwhittaker *or are available at all?

Are all the phones, Ethernet cards, etc. that technically fall under this poorly understood jargon going to get swapped out for US-made devices with *zero* overseas parts?

That sounds like a nonsensically heavy lift.

@zackwhittaker So.. does that mean there's going to be a shortage of consumers routers? The US doesn't make anything anymore do they?
@paulbrzeski @zackwhittaker Apparently, Starlink devices are manufactured in Texas. As far as I can see, the FCC mandates that any transmitters (ie. 5G, wifi, satellite etc.) be manufactured in the USA, other components (SoC, ethernet chips etc.) can be made anywhere else.
@zackwhittaker i think it is to make sure that the routers are accessible for the US gov. And it is not possible to do that with with brands from overseas...
@bjarkess @zackwhittaker We want to make sure the *right* people are stealing your data.
@zackwhittaker "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."
@zackwhittaker Who makes routers in the US?
