I sometimes write posts I never send. This one is from a few days ago, before today's announcement that Epic is laying off over 1000 more people.

As critical as I often am of Steam, if I were offered to pick between a game activation code for Steam and Epic, I'd have to think hard on that. On the one hand, I've had enough of Steam, but on the other hand, I no longer believe that the Epic store is here to stay. 1/3

A new business not being profitable while it gets its footing is the norm, but I don't know how long Epic is going to stick with that. It's a corporation, and there will be a time when it will want to cut costs even further, same as it did with the layoffs and then the recent vbucks cost changes in Fortnite. Epic giving in to Google reducing its fee only slightly is also a sign that Tim Sweeney isn't willing to fight to the death to pursue an idea. 2/3

I don't think I'm going to stop buying games on the Epic store just yet, and if I don't, I'll continue to go for the best deal case by case. But if the offers are equal, will the developer getting a higher cut outweigh the risk of store closure? Does the latter even matter? No digital product is forever. GOG aside, we buy subscriptions, and I'm generally content with the thought "play through and move on". 3/3
