Good Morning #Canada
Technically Black Canadians, recently emancipated, earned the right to vote in 1837. However the reality of #VotingRights was very different for them, for women, Indigenous people, and poor Canadians. The history of voting rights in Canada was messy, unfair, and full of examples where our government abused their power.
Remember, voting is a privilege achieved through significant struggle. Don't squander it.

The chaotic story of the right to vote in Canada | CMHR

The story of the right to vote in Canada is the story of a centuries‐long struggle to extend democratic rights to all citizens. It’s a chaotic tale that includes rebellions and riots, as well as protests, and visits to the Supreme Court of Canada. Without further ado, here is the story of voting rights in what is now Canada.

The freedom to vote for any eligible candidate, or none is a right. Privilege can be "gifted" or withheld, rights are intrinsic. This doesn't mean they can't be unlawfully or unjustly abrogated, but it does mean we should be grateful to those who fought for them, not those who were forced to relinquish control.
It also means we should be prepared to fight to uphold those rights, not defer to the limitation of our (or others) privileges.
