Welp, that went about like I expected. I setup a Facebook account so I could use the marketplace. A phone number *wasn't* required to create an account. So far so good. So I post an item to sell & they said they needed to review the posting. An hour later I check back & they had reviewed the posting but need to verify my identity before making it active. They wanted a government ID. Fuck that. I deleted the account. They asked why I was deleting the account: "I don't feel safe on Facebook."
@elaterite Yikes! No thank you 🚫 I recently returned to selling on eBay, which is a much better experience than it used to be. Might be worth a look, Bob 👀
@mikehindleuk Ya, I've sold on eBay. I buy as well. But I have several large items to sell that can't be shipped. I do need to list a bunch of stuff, it's just that their fees are so high these days. When I used to sell tons of stuff on eBay, in the late '90s & early '00s, the fees only added up to 3-4%. Now they're up around 13%. I have a friend who said I could use her FB account to sell a couple of things. I'll try that if I don't get any hits from Craigslist. Thanks!

@elaterite Ah ok, gotcha! Weird to hear about the eBay fees, as both things I've sold so far on there were free to sell.

Hope you manage to get it all sorted/sold...

@mikehindleuk How did you sell something for free? Ebay has always had fees. Insertion and final value fees. Craigslist doesn't have fees, although, a couple of years ago they established a flat $5 fee for selling cars.
@elaterite Ummmmm not sure 🤣 It's advertised here as no selling fees unless you sell 1000 items per month or something like that.

@elaterite

"It's free, easy and safe to sell on eBay for UK-based private sellers. You get 300 free listings every month, and you only pay fees for optional listing upgrades or if you deliver to an overseas address."

eBay

@mikehindleuk Wow, what is up with this?

"It's now free for UK-based private sellers to sell on eBay (excluding...vehicle listings). You won't pay final value fees or regulatory operating fees when your items sell."

Outside of the UK:
"The final value fee is calculated as 12.8% of the total amount of the sale (which includes the item price, postage, and any applicable taxes), plus a fixed charge of 30p per order..."

Wow, what a ripoff. 😡

@elaterite That's crazy! I assumed it was free everywhere. Surely if they can do it here they can do it everywhere 🤔
