If you've got a bit of wishy-washy mid-grey image (as this was), try this in Affinity (also works in Photoslop).

Add a black rectangle over the top, change the blend mode to either overlay (harshest results) or soft light (softest results).

For something in the middle, choose soft light, duplicate the black rectangle layer and reduce the opacity until you find the right balance.
