I've come to find that I get really irked when people express that everything should be open source.

The crazy part about this is that I actually agree with those people! At least, that literal sentence.

But it irks me because of the underlying attitude that a lot of diehard FOSS advocates have. The implication being that open source is ALL you need to make the world better. Which is complete nonsense.

Open source is important, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. Modern software has so many problems and you can't focus on just one problem.

I've been doing a lot of work on my first major long-term project, yet I have said very little about it. I am entirely certain that I could have gotten a version of it out to y'all by now. But you know what? I'm taking my time. Rather than rush it out the door and let it become a brittle piece of crap like every other piece of software out there, I'm taking my time. I am scrutinizing every single detail. I want it to be the best thing I could ever make. I want it to be as well thought-out as possible. Every single detail will make a statement about my personal vision of computing, even if this one project alone doesn't tell the whole vision. And I hope that when I'm ready, putting this project out into the world will make a more powerful statement about computing than I could ever hope to write about. Which is why I've written very little about it. After all, actions speak louder than words, right?

@melvian sometimes I think it’s kinda like copyleft where people pretend that if everyone abandoned copyright then people would be freed from the shackles of evil copyright laws (disregarding the fact that copyleft still just uses existing copyright laws)

do I agree that copyright sucks? yeah! do I think I then get to tell people to stop doing DRM and paywalls? hell the fucking no people need money for food and shit and it doesn’t matter what I personally think about piracy when they’re fearing for the next rental payment

real missing the forest for the tree type shit
