My daughter, who has two years left of high school, has informed me that she would like to study art and #animation in #Canada She's neurodivergent, queer, and exceptionally talented (if I can brag.) Can anyone recommend places we should look into?
@darkwolf I went to school at Capilano University. Their 2d and 3d animation (the one I took) programs are great, and I recommend them. https://www.gradshow.com/

@darkwolf

The student knows better than anyone what approaches are comfortable for them.

There are regions with concentrations - primarily by city - Vancouver, Toronto, and MontrΓ©al. But you want to focus on school-before-job, imo.

I hope you are getting responses from people working in this field; they will show how varied and unique each person's path ends up being.

@Amgine @darkwolf one thing worth mentioning is the industry is in absolute tatters right now. If you go to a school and they say they can 100% get you a job in the industry, they are lying and you should go somewhere else. I did the 3d program at CapU while my wife did the 2d program. Right now I'm employed probably because I went down the software development track way back in 2013, whole she's been looking for work for the past year. And she's not alone at all with looking for work.
@propersquid @Amgine ok got you, sorry to hear about the employment issues, there. I appreciate the heads up, though I'm wishing everyone the best of luck financially
@darkwolf Emily Carr in Vancouver has a good reputation. Vancouver is an expensive city though
@chimpchomp right on! I loved Vancouver when I had the chance to visit. I bet she'd like that too.
@darkwolf i did my bfa at alberta university of the arts (formerly alberta college of art and design) in Calgary and they have an animation program. great school with a lot of cool alumni coming out of there

@darkwolf *unfortunately alberta's government is not great right now, but i am still very happy with my experience at ACAD
@forestine sorry to hear about the current government, but that's great to hear how much you like it. We'll take a look, thank you!

@darkwolf

Sheridan College (campuses in southern Ontario) at least used to have programs in animation and other arts that were well-regarded. I haven't looked lately, so I could be out of date, but you could look there:
